Top Tips for Preparing for Vacation Without Your Dog

It’s normal to feel guilty about leaving your dog behind when you go on vacation but needing a break from your pet is not a reflection of your commitment to them. In fact, that time away can actually help strengthen your relationship because you’ll come back feeling refreshed and recharged, ready to tackle the world with them. To help both you and your pup have a stress-free vacation we’ve put together our top 4 tips!

1. Bring the Suitcases Out Early

The sight of a strange rolling thing suddenly coming out of the depths of your house can be alarming for your dog so bring out your bags earlier than when you need to start packing.

Use lots of praise and treats to help your dog feel comfortable around this new foreign object. Avoid forcing them to investigate the suitcase or coaxing them by placing treats on top of your bag. This can create emotional conflict for them and once they’ve eaten the treat they might panic or become more fearful because they realize how much closer they are now to the scary object.

2. Stick to their Schedule

Make it easier for whoever is watching your pup by writing down your dog’s schedule. Include details such as when they are fed, how much and what times they usually go to the washroom. Having your dog sitter maintain this routine will help your dog feel more comfortable and at ease during your absence.

3. Set Up Practice Sleepovers

If you plan to leave your dog with a sitter or at a boarding facility, schedule some practice sleepovers before the actual thing. This will make the transition of being away from home smoother for your pup. They’ll also get to become more acclimitized to their new environment and whoever is going to be taking care of them while you’re away.

4. Quality Time and Exercise Before You Leave

Spend some quality time with your dog before you leave and make sure that you give them plenty of exercise. Take them out for a sniff walk or engage them in some scent work to help them relax and feel less anxious about your departure.

Remember, taking care of yourself is an integral part of being a responsible guardian. Embrace self-care, give yourself permission to reset and recharge and watch how it positively impacts your bond with your pup. Happy travels!
